That does not mean that the government should turn a blind eye if a religious sector is under oppression. Rather, it gives the government power to step in and protect religious bodies should their freedom ever be threatened. It also prevents the government from interfering or refusing them rights. Therefore, it prevents the will of a dominating faith to control or eliminate a smaller sector of a different faith.
James Madison, who was instrumental in the formation of the Bill of Rights, thought that if it was added and properly executed it could not be of disservice. His forethought has far fetching results all for the better of the Constitution.
It was also brought into being so that it does not violate an individual’s right to worship, or in some cases, the right not to worship. A person is free to choose whatever path he takes. Of course, parents still have the right to choose the kind of faith and education the child has to follow.
Furthermore, it ceased to be a matter of religious revolution, and it was a revolutionary thought to include it among civil rights, and it took people a while to realize it. Today, everyone recognizes it as a basic civil right as opposed to views a few hundred years ago.
Religious freedom was also included in the Bill of Rights as it also addresses issues on a symbolic level. It demonstrates the freedom of citizens as granted by the government.
