Amnesty International has severely condemned the approach of the Sri Lankan government towards investigating the causes of human rights violations. According to the Amnesty report, Sri Lankan government does not have the capacity to control human rights abuse. Hence, Amnesty international has urged the member countries of United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) to properly address the rapidly deteriorating human rights situation where abductions, killings and kidnappings are increasing at an alarming level. Amnesty international has requested for help from independent monitoring agencies so as to get a better understanding regarding the causes and solutions of human rights violations occurring in Sri Lanka.
The most troubled portion in Sri Lanka is the Northeast region, an area controlled by the government. Sri Lankan government has been a real failure in protecting the life of civilians. Incidents such as unlawful killing, enforced disappearances, extortion, intimidation and recruitment of child soldiers are happening daily. This has increased with the formation of Karuna paramilitary group operated by the Sri Lankan government.
Amnesty report has accused security forces to have been involved in the recent extrajudicial killing of journalists and media men in Jaffna. Amnesty believes that the emergency regulations imposed in Sri Lanka are also favoring increased human rights violation and existing discrimination against Tamil community.
Drafting its 8-point request to the UNHRC, Amnesty International has demanded for an international level cooperation towards working out an amicable and peaceful solution to the existing turmoil in Sri Lanka.
