Free Speech And Public Schools
Free speech in schools is one of the most hotly debated topics these days. While students argue that their freedom of speech cannot be curtailed by any school, the authorities concerned feel that letting young children “express” themselves in a manner that hurts, violates or propagates a particular agenda would have bigger repercussions on the child, the school and the society at large. |
The parents on the other hand are often caught in between law and their child’s freedom to express his/her views in public. They feel that as parents, they are sufficient to make sure the child does not go overboard or hurt others feelings. One famous example was the wearing of black armbands by students to protest against the Vietnam War in the U.S. The students managed to claim their right to express their view and at the same time win the lawsuit filed in the U.S Supreme court.
However, of late, students have managed to find ridiculous reasons to claim their right to First Amendment. The schools on the other hand have claimed that wearing a particular logo, design, color or dressing up inappropriately have increased occurrences of numerous crimes and unethical practices among youngsters. Gang wars and indiscriminate usage of arms has led to disturbing scenes.
Another huge reason for restricting the child’s speech and expression has been the increasing incidences of reduced tolerance towards other religions, ethnics and cultures. While schools argue that these restrictions are necessary to maintain decorum, students believe they are mature enough and have a right to express what they feel. The debate as to who is right seems to be endless.
