| People have a right to express their views and thoughts publicly and privately. The First Amendment in particular deals with this issue where it declares that citizens have a right to express their religion, experience their freedom of speech and press. Free Speech And Public Schools

Free speech in schools is one of the most hotly debated topics these days. While students argue that their freedom of speech cannot be curtailed by any school, the authorities concerned feel that letting young children “express” themselves in a manner that hurts, violates or propagates a particular agenda would have bigger repercussions on the child, the school and the society at large.
The parents on the other hand are often caught in between law and their child’s freedom to express his/her views in public. They feel that as parents, they are sufficient to make sure the child does not go overboard or hurt others feelings. One famous example was the wearing of black armbands by students to protest against the Vietnam War in the U.S. The students managed to claim their right to express their view and at the same time win the lawsuit filed in the U.S Supreme court. Free speech is one of the most widely misused rights in the society. While some cleverly use it to propagate an agenda, others can quite simply turn the tables against themselves by uttering something unwanted. Not many understand that there is a very thin line distinguishing free speech and going overboard. There have been numerous instances where people have been persecuted and punished for “expressing their view”. While it is premature to place someone behind bars for his thoughts, it is even more foolish for the concerned person to show his heroism by “rebelling” against the thoughts and feelings of the general masses.
Social, religious and political views are some of the common areas where many people cross the line.
